From the Journals...Phan Thiet, Vietnam. January 23, 1999
We drove back to the dunes, and spent a few minutes waiting for our home-grown models to appear. I was surprised that the souvenir and cold drink stalls were already setting up at 5:20 am. We got tired of waiting , and set off before they caught up with us. We basically had 4 set-ups, the first of which had the 2 models (with conical hats and carrying baskets) on a dune, silhouetted by the pre-dawn sky. Then we moved to the others which, due to lighting or too many tourists in the background, weren’t as strong. All in all, it was quite successful. We took a coffee break at 7:30, and I was even able to get releases from our subjects, a mother and daughter, I think. We drove to Mui Ne, the fishing village, and got shots of the very active beach, where the morning’s catch was being brought in and sorted. Minh (my photographer friend who had been introduced to me by my agent) was at times the center of attention, getting people to do certain things, even paying 1 girl after she held a dripping basket of shrimp over her head. A very productive morning--I shot about 7-1/2 rolls! We returned to the hotel after 9, and had a shower and breakfast, before departing at 10:15.
