Blue crane (Anthropoides paradisea) captive pair, Hlaliatkulu Sanctuary. Natal Drakensberg, South Africa.Blue Cranes What a view to wake up to--a ridge of steep mountains. We packed up and had a bowl of cereal, and were met at 6:05 by Brent Coverdale of the Southern Africa Crane Foundation.

We went to a large farm and found wattled cranes and crowned cranes, but too far away to photograph. Then we stopped at the Crane Foundation and photographed some captive birds. These truly are beautiful birds, and it is easy to see why members of the International Crane Foundation are such dedicated supporters.

Grey Crowned Crane (Balearica regulorum) close-up. KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.Grey Crowned Crane Had a nice big lunch at a nice big British pub, and have checked in at the Nottingham Road Hotel.

After a shower, Anderson and Brent came back to take us to the sunset destination--the tree where crowned cranes roost. The light was nice to start with, but as we waited for the cranes, the mist started rolling in. By the time the cranes arrived, it was too misty for pix.
