From the Journals…Isla Santa Cruz, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. August 17, 1993Giant Tortise Head 1Giant Tortise (Geochelone elephantopus) head, front view, Isla Santa Cruz. Galapagos National Park, Ecuador. Up at 6:30, breakfast at 7. We left for the Charles Darwin Station at 8. We had a look at the museum first, and then at some of the pens for the young tortise hatchlings. Then we went to some of the pens for larger giant tortises, and they were big. They can live for 150-200 years, and weigh up to 500 pounds. Despite their reputations, those things can move quickly. They are constantly moving their heads, and often walking around. I got some shots with an overcast sky, and then hung around until the weather got better. I shot 4 or 5 rolls, so I was happy. We viewed “Solitary George” from a distance.
