From the Journals… Santa Clara, Cuba. February 19, 2017My Ridec. 1960 Cadilac wagon used as a shared taxi, Colón. Matanzas, Cuba. After a slightly smaller breakfast than yesterday, I walked over the the corner of the park where I met the guy from last night with the colectivo. He told me to get my luggage and come back because there was a taxi leaving in around 10 to 30 minutes. When I returned, I sat in the park and waited for about 45 minutes. Another guy had approached me before, and said that his taxi was now ready. I would be the eleventh and final passenger. I walked across the park with him, and within five minutes the 1954 Cadillac (I think) pulled up. My pack and I were put in the back, and off we went. I sat with a young couple from Austria, and a third woman who was from their same small town joined in the conversation. I got dropped off at the traffic circle outside Varadero, and found another colectivo towards Matanzas and was off within 15 minutes. This one was a well-maintained Chevy BelAir with AC! The ride was quick, but I was pissed off when he dropped me off just outside town, despite having said he would go to the casa. He wanted to charge me an additional 2 CUC, when the entire ride from Varadero only cost 3 CUC. Comments
