We had a short travel day today, which was nice for a change. We pulled into our camp, in the dunes just outside Tiguentourine, at about 12:30.
We are about 35 miles from the Libyan border after passing within 25 miles at In Amenas. It is really beautiful--fascinating to watch the sand blow over the surface of the dunes.
Lunch was a confusing affair--macaroni salad served in the truck without telling everybody. General lack of communication. Truck was packed with people to avoid the wind. Very claustrophobic, and I had to get out.
We went for a peaceful walk in the dunes, and then sat in the sun relaxing for some time. Decided to climb the big dune above camp. It is quite a view, and since we had waited until later, the light was much better. We sat for a bit on top, then we goose-stepped down so that I could help Graham with dinner since it was our turn to cook.
We did a 3-course affair--onion soup, rice with tomatoes, pepper, veggie sauce, and orange cobbler and custard for “pudding” as the Brits say. It’s the second day in a row for a 3-course meal--we’ll all get fat.
Sleeping under the stars tonight. A great way to end another great day.
A behind-the-scenes look at leaving camp. It’s not all fun and games!
