Day 21. Last camp, in “The Gully”--actually a cozy spot which is at times a wind tunnel. But up there on the plain above us the wind roared all day long, and down here it’s much nicer.
Not to be denied another day of adventure in the arctic, we set out individually and in couples to do the landscape around. Robert and Marilyn walk to Mackenzie Lake as Andy walks to hills right from camp, Dave and Robin a pic on the flowing liquid and to large pond with mud flats, Eric to mud flats.
Many skeletons were found, especially by Robert and Marilyn--no reports on what happened to the meat that adorned these bones--a small wolf or fox head, and rack of antlers attached to a skull of a caribou. Eric, a vertebrae. Mostly it was birds and plants and a lone musk ox feeding its way up the river across from the camp.
Robin got to put her hands in the Arctic Ocean, and Dave got a picture of it. DEW stations--seen better from the flats than from the cliff.
Cloudy all day. Cold! 30’s!
Supper-time. Called North Wright and they are picking us up tomorrow around supper time. Hope they have pizza in-flight meal.
Over and OUT!
Andy de Long, Expedition Leader
You’re cold, you’re hungry, you’re in a wind tunnel that is unceasing. It’s wet and you dream of twisting an ankle in the tussocks. You have entered...THE ARCTIC ZONE. What a great place.
