Sunset Silhouette of people in boat (dugout canoe) on water. Zaire River, Zaire. (Congo River, Democratic Republic of Congo)Sunset Silhouette, Zaire River Awoke to a gentle, warm breeze and a view of the (Zaire/Congo) river, with the miniature islands of plants slowly floating downstream. We had breakfast of pineapple and fresh bread, and watched the river people come to life. We witnessed the ironic use of the river in amazement, horror, disbelief, and disgust--people bathe with river water brought up in buckets, drink it, use it for cooking, and then piss and shit in it, throw biodegradable and non-biodegradable garbage in it, and let their engines spill oil into it. Unreal!

We had tea on board our docked cargo boat while sitting on a bench facing the opposite bank, about ½ mile across. We then took a long walk to the market to buy provisions for the next 4 or 5 days. We took the long way back--through town--and went to the little restaurant that Ngembe recommended to me yesterday. Cold, sickly-sweet coffee turned us off the place--it doesn’t get any stars from us.//

Captain says we are to leave tomorrow afternoon.
